Before and After - Villa Esquina, Pollenca

Updated: Apr 17, 2023

During 2017, my wife and I hunted around the north of Mallorca for a family holiday home that we could share with friends, family and holidaymakers. After a thorough search, we found Villa Groig, a superb structure and location, but in much need of a face-lift and a name change! So after purchasing the property in October 2017, we set to work on a complete refurbishment of the property and to transform it into Villa Esquina, our beautiful "House on the Corner".

The Property is set at the foot of the dramatic La Font hills, just a short walk from the beautiful town of Pollenca, where you'll find a wide selection of excellent restaurants, bars, shops, museums and bustling markets around the lovely Placa Major town square:

Pollenca town is also the home of the Calvari Steps, 365 steps from the town to the small church at the top of the hill, littered with various local produce shops and traditional Spanish homes. A great way to work off a tasty lunch in the town square!

The beach is just a 12-minute drive away, where you'll find more great eating and drinking venues on the newly pedestrianised beachfront walkway alongside one of many surrounding soft sandy beaches.

Now you can see why we fell in love with Pollenca and the surrounding area. Here are some pictures of how the villa used to look and how it looks today! The whole project was managed by David Nicolau with interior design advice from Natalie Blackshaw.

The house underwent a complete transformation. Interior walls were been removed and moved to make better use of the space, thanks to our good friend Natalie Blackshaw interior designer. This also enabled us to install new discreet air conditioning, central heating for the winter months, a new open plan kitchen, dining room and lounge, new traditional Mallorcan stone flooring throughout inside and out, new bathrooms, central heating and the list goes on.

The outside of the villa has also changed colour. We extended the pool to almost 16 metres long, repaved the whole patio area and relandscaped the garden; adding fruit trees, bushes and local plants as well as a new relaxing BBQ area (which we call Pete's Bar - based on a previous holiday!) and an astroturf area for football, badminton and basketball.

The floor plans below show you how things look today. The whole project was a fun, but thoroughly exhausting experience. Today, we use the villa 2-6 times per year as a family, otherwise, it's successfully rented most of the time.

This post should give you a flavour of how much time and love we have invested into this project. My wife and I have stayed in villas all over the world and hope that what we’ve learned has helped to make this place special. The whole project was managed by David Nicolau with interior design advice from Natalie Blackshaw.
