Staying in La Font, Pollença: walks, town and beaches

La Font is the part of Pollença where we chose to have our villa. It sits at the foot of the Tramuntana mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape, and it's quiet. Yet you're not cut off. Pollença old town is around a 20–25 minute walk away, and the beach at Port de Pollença is a 15-minute drive.

That balance is why we chose it. You can spend the morning by the pool, walk into town for lunch, and be on the beach by the afternoon without ever feeling you've spent the day in the car.

[CHECK: add two or three things only a local would know about La Font – the walking route into town, the nearest shop, bakery or café, what the road is like. Andy/Sarah to supply; nothing invented here.]

Why stay in La Font

  • Quiet: a residential area on the edge of town rather than a resort strip
  • Mountain views: the Tramuntana is right behind you. Bedroom 5's "gin & tonic" balcony looks straight at it
  • Walkable: around 20–25 minutes on foot to the old town and the Plaça Major
  • Close to the coast: 15 minutes' drive to Port de Pollença
  • Room for cars: secure parking at Villa Esquina for up to 4 cars, which matters when two families are travelling together

Walks from the area

Pollença is one of the best bases in Mallorca for walking. Some of the walks in our free guide:

  • El Calvari: 365 steps up from the old town
  • Puig de Maria: a 4.31 km walk up to the hilltop sanctuary above the town
  • Bóquer valley: 5.49 km, an easy walk out to the sea and a favourite for birdwatchers
  • GR221, Son Amer to Pont Romà: 17.45 km, the final stretch of the long-distance Dry Stone Route through the Tramuntana, finishing at Pollença's Roman bridge

[CHECK: confirm the descriptions of Puig de Maria (sanctuary), the Bóquer valley (easy, birdwatching) and the GR221 (Dry Stone Route) finishing at Pont Romà – the distances are from the guide; the descriptive words are mine]

Town, markets and festivals

  • Pollença Sunday market: 08:00–13:30, about 300 stalls around the Plaça Major
  • Alcúdia market: Tuesdays and Sundays, 09:00–13:30
  • Moors and Christians: Pollença's best-known fiesta, every August

Beaches

From La Font you can reach several very different beaches:

  • Port de Pollença: the nearest beach, 15 minutes' drive away
  • Cala Sant Vicenç: four small coves – Barques, Clara, Molins and Carbó [CHECK: drive time from the villa]
  • Formentor: a beach at the end of the Formentor peninsula. From 15 May to 18 October the road is closed to private cars from 10:00 to 22:00; take the TIB bus 334 from Port de Pollença

More on the coast on our Port de Pollença page.
